About the brand
The distillery was founded by the Laird of Jura, Archibald Campbell in 1810. The distillery fell into disrepair but was restored in 1884. Around 1900 it was again in disuse and dismantled. In the 1950s two local estate owners Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith keen to revive the local economy had the distillery rebuilt and expanded by the architects Lothian, Barclay, Jarvis & Boys with input from whisky and distillery expert William Delmé-Evans. The work was completed in 1963, and included the installation of taller stills, allowing the distillery to create a mix of malts.

Jura is an odd spot apparently. Theres one bar one inn and supposedly one house of ill-repute. What's more obviously theres one refinery. In any case its best distinguishing strength is that its where Orwell composed 1984. Orwell is one of my scholarly legends (each understudy of English should peruse his exposition on the most proficient method to make some tea) so this whisky had a great deal to satisfy when it was poured at an epic Jura vertical tasting this week. It was not the 30-year-old recorded year but rather a prior variant discharged in 2013 at 19 years of age. This one was done in Palo Cortado sherry barrels and restricted to 4800 containers at an ABV of 42%. Luckily it was generally excellent however tsk-tsk I didn't take notes and my memory of the subtleties has blurred. Get the job done to say it was mind boggling and even and not overwhelmed by the sherry finish (not at all like the red-wine barrel lipstick slapped on Juras 18-year-old pig). Jura makes a better than average distillate - I preferred the 10 - and plainly it can age well. A portion of the more seasoned autonomous bottlings we took a stab at the night were excellent. This makes me presume they have had an issue with their barrel the board throughout the most recent few decades which thus recommends they can possibly vindicate themselves in time as the more established age at proprietor Whyte and Mackay gives over control to any semblance of ex-Compass Box blender Gregg Glass. Provided that this is true we might be approaching the finish of Juras tragic days.
