Tonight’s dram takes me (virtually) to northern California, to Home Base Spirits, a distillery run by twin sisters, who don’t rely on grandpa’s moonshining, or their father’s – they did it all themselves, from the ground-up. This is another farm-to-glass full-lifecycle distiller. Their single malt opens with buttery, creamy, warm apricot pie with melting vanilla ice cream dripping down the sides – wonderfully smooth, followed by spicy black pepper and thick, chewy apricot jam with cinnamon, candied orange, and herbal notes, similar to a nice gin, then spicy gooey honey. The creamy mouthfeel is warm and inviting, with thin-but-clingy legs that deliver a medium-long finish of warm apricot pie and spicy honey. These sister-twins have created something quite special.
