This evening, I wrap-up my virtual tour of American distilleries that are making scotch-style single-malt barley whisky, back out west at the Westward distillery in Oregon. My tasting of the Pinot Noir cask and Cask Strength were both very positive. My third dram from Westward is the Stout cask (my favorite type of beer). With the first sip, flavors of ginger bread, orange peel, and a tiny twinge of sour are revealed, soon followed by creamy milk chocolate and cinnamon. The legs are not that good, but despite that, the finish is relatively long, and evolving, exposing the stout-like flavors – malt, chocolate, hops, mocha. If you enjoy a dark, rich, thick stout, this single-malt is for you. For American distilleries, Westward is head-and-shoulders above the rest, and on-par with many Scottish single-malts. Drink slow, drink long, drink a variety, drink often.
