Named after the traditional artisanal festivities - or "Jolgorios" - of villages in the brand's native homeland of Oaxaca, Mexico, El Jolgorio mezcals are are made exclusively from different species and varieties of wild and semi-wild harvested agave. They are then twice distilled in copper pot stills. On every bottle is inscribed the species of agave, the age at harvest, the village of production, and the name of the Maestro Mezcalero. Unlike the brand's other offerings, El Jolgorio Pechuga Mezcal is not named for the species/variety of agave it is made from, but rather is a celebratory style of Espadin mezcal. I have been a couple of days in oaxaca city and obviously needed to taste through a great deal of mezcals. From around 25 tasted there and in any event 10 more on my movement through mexico this one was as yet my preferred with regards to a mezcal that doesn't taste very startling or unordinary (like some tepeztate mezcals for instance). I was astonished how symphonious yet complex this soul was without anything that would occupy you from getting a charge out of each taste.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Soft. Berries and cream sweetness. Some clean cucumber.

Taste

Smoke up front, with a little of turkey coming through. Almost more like the taste you get in your mouth when you can tell the turkey is burning. Lots of sweetness and dried fruits follow the smoke and dry earthiness as you swallow.

Finish

Long lingering finish that leaves a tingling menthol sugar on a deep breath, but leaves the tongue bone dry.
