Established on the La Mothe de Margaux estate first occupied around the 12th century, Chateau Margaux is a brand of premium Bordeaux wines awarded Premier cru (first-growth) status under the Bordeaux Classification of 1855. Located on the left banks of the Garonne estuary in the Medoc region of France, this well-established winery has a long lineage of ownership, which reached fever status under the guidance of the Lestonnacs - who expanded the property in the 1570s. Around 1973, the estate was pronounced a national treasure by the French government. Following this, bids for the estate by names such as Coca-Cola were actively prevented by even the French President at the time, Valery Giscard d'Estaing. Successfully purchased by Andre Mentzelopoulos in 1977, the brand continued under the management of his daughter, Corinne, and has become one of the most expensive wines in the region. Cultivated with a range of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Sauvignon Blanc - Chateau Margaux annually produces 150,000 cases of its premium Gran vin alone.
