Matusalem Gran Reserva 15-year rum is produced using a combination of rums aged on average 15 years and distilled from molasses using the solera process. The Matusalem company was established in 1872 originally in Santiago de Cuba. The company fled the country following the Cuban Revolution in 1959 and the Gran Reserva rum is now produced in the Dominican Republic. The Matusalem Rum company was started by the Camp brothers in 1872 as a family affair. The "new" Cuban rum rapidly caught on in the world's markets. In the early 1940's the company experienced a period of tremendous growth and by the 1950's it had already captured 50% of the Cuban market, making it the leading rum sold in Cuba. Today, descendents of the founders produce Ron Matusalem in the Dominican Republic. The brand “Matusalem” was named after the Biblical Patriarch, Methuselah who was said to have lived for 969 years, so symbolising the patient ageing and old world craftsmenship used to give Ron Matusalem Rum its exceptional flavour. The key to Matusalems’s Gran Reserva rum’s complexity is the Solera aging process, where various mature rums are carefully blended together, with the main component being 15 years old. Generally excellent rum with traces of vanilla all alone. As blender it likewise has a malty flavor.

Great rum. Fiery yet smooth. Overwhelming vanilla and cinnamon flavors. Gotten done with a little oak/wood yet nothing eminent. Presumably the rum that rides the sipper versus blender line the most that I've attempted.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Complex, fine and complete. Persistent woody notes. Dry woody tones provide a rich, intense aroma. Rich flavor of toasted dry fruits and caramel.

Taste

Very pleasant. A smooth texture and a complex, persistent evolution, with notes of oak.

Finish

Smooth, inviting sensation of cacao. Cognac-like finish.
