About the brand
With a history dating back over 200 years, Orkney-based Highland Park is one of the most respected single malts in the world. The distillery works to the same exacting and with the same methods as it has had since its birth in 1798. The distillery found its feet fully in the 1870s, when it fell under the ownership of first William Stuart [who owned Miltonduff] and then from 1885 with his business partner James Grant (previously the manager of The Glenlivet) who took full control in 1895. Highland Distillers (who had shares in R&B) took full control in 1937 and Highland Park is now part of the Edrington Group. Highland Park is one of only a handful of distilleries that still retains a traditional malting floor, working each batch of malt by hand, in what is an extremely labor intensive process. To malt their barley, it is steeped it in the mineral rich water from the Crantit spring, before transferred to the malting floor to slowly germinate. When it is ready, the barley is then placed in kilns where the aromatic peating process begins. Highland Park’s bourbon barrels are not routinely filled. Traditional oak casks seasoned with dry Oloroso sherry are used; which the distillery claims help contribute to the “distinctive richness” in the resulting spirit. The whisky then goes through a process called Harmonisation. Distillers often see this practice as an unnecessary expense, yet Highland Park consider it an essential part of their traditional process. Each individual batch of whisky is drawn together from a variety of cask types, contributing an array of flavours. This harmonisation takes up to six months and gives the whisky improved consistency, complexity and balance. However, ‘unnecessary’ the traditional processes and additional harmonisation may seem, the resulting whisky appears to gain great benefit. Highland Park has been named ‘The Best Spirit in the World’ no less than three times, and has also gained the accolades of: World’s Best Single Malt for its 21 years old and the Ultimate Spirit in 2013 for the 25 year old.

Good country Park Harald is one of six in the Warrior arrangement. The worker at the air terminal who let me have a taste said this was one of the smokier ones. I can't verify or refute that until I've tasted more in the arrangement yet it certainly has smoke albeit adjusted. The nose is mellow with clear berry notes coming through. The distiller says strawberries and I can concur on that range fruity in any event! Or maybe lovely. On the sense of taste the natural products are still there and enduring round to the vibe with only a trace of Sherry who brings a scramble of tannins for a dry introduction to the completion. Talking about the completion you get some peat smoke which is delicate despite everything finishing with flower takes note of that are mellow instead of perfumed. The consume is there yet not overpowering. This is a no age statment measure at 40% ABV. It will be intriguing to contrast with other Good country Parks like the 18yo or maybe Viking Pride (46% ABV). Good country Park discharged their Warrior Arrangement of movement retail select single malts a couple of years back. There were 6 on the whole each named after a renowned Viking warrior or ruler. 4 of them were truly sensible evaluated the other 2 not really. I surveyed #2 Einar some time back and recall it being quite acceptable so I got #3 Harald. Every one in the arrangement utilizes an alternate extent of American and European oak just as first and top off barrels. This one is 50/50 first/top off barrels and approximately 50/50 American/European oak. Packaged at 40% ABV and is chill separated and a characteristic brilliant shading. The initial not many pours from the container were genuinely exhausting in the nose with hardly any going on. Some feeble notes of lemon nectar and velvety vanilla with some light peat smoke. Sawdust cigarette cinders. After the jug oxidized be that as it may things truly improved. Sherry notes toffee caramel and a few walnuts. Plantation products of peaches apples pears. Cherry blooms and sandalwood on occasion which gave it a Japanese vibe. What came next was somewhat of an astonishment a blast of berry flavors. Raspberries blackberries blueberries and strawberries. Next came chocolate and bunches of fudge. Hazelnut pecans and progressively caramel with a trace of espresso. Lush now and again. Things continued changing around on me and no genuine clearness came with regards to what sort of whisky this was attempting to be. For the most part it was acceptable however. The sense of taste experienced similar changes. Genuinely light from the start vanilla and lemon citrus. A dry dirty peat and somewhat tannic. After sufficient opportunity and air in the container things truly improved. It turned out to be very fruity with pineapple mango papaya apricots and apples. Malty grain sugar ginger and clove. Puffs of smoke fudge dried strawberries and nectar. A light bodied mouthfeel that is slender however rich somewhat dry. The completion was medium length tannic light sherry nutty strawberries apple skins and dry. I need to state that from the start this was a quite helpless case of a Good country Park. Very little of anything going on and on the off chance that I had appraised it at that point it would have been a 2.5. When the jug got some air in it I was stunned at the changes. Immense fruity notes one day fudgy one more day. It ended up being a quite better than average malt. Not a horrible cost $60 for 700mL (Einar I believe was $45 for 1L and the better of the 2 in quality). Still I for the most part delighted in this one and will score it a 3.5. Good wishes
